Most visitors to Armenia do not need a visa — citizens of over 60 countries can enter visa-free for up to 180 days per year. Nationals of most other countries can apply for an eVisa online in advance (AMD 3,000 / ~$8, processed in 3 business days). Visa on arrival is also available at Zvartnots Airport for eligible nationalities. This guide covers all three options with accurate, source-verified information.

Quick answer — do I need a visa for Armenia?

Probably not. Citizens of the USA, all EU member states, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, UAE, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and many other countries enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days per year. No application or fee required — your passport is sufficient.

If your country is not on the visa-free list, you can apply for an Armenian eVisa online at evisa.mfa.am — AMD 3,000 (~$8) for a 21-day single entry visa, processed in 3 business days.

Temporary exemption January–July 2026

From 1 January to 1 July 2026, nationals of 113 countries who hold a valid residence permit issued by the United States, EU member states, Schengen area countries, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Oman may enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days. The residence permit must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Armenia. Source: mfa.am

After 1 July 2026

The temporary residence-permit exemption runs until 1 July 2026. Check the MFA website for any extension or replacement policy if you are travelling after that date.

Armenian eVisa — Online Application

If your nationality is not on the visa-free list, the most practical option is an Armenian eVisa, applied for online before travel. The eVisa system is managed by the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at evisa.mfa.am.

Use only the official portal

Only apply through evisa.mfa.am — the official Armenian government portal. Third-party websites offer to process Armenian eVisas but charge additional fees for the same service. The government portal is free of service charges beyond the official visa fee.

Fees verified June 2026 from armenian-lawyer.com and mfa.am/en/fees. USD amounts approximate at AMD 390/$1. Always verify current fees at evisa.mfa.am before applying.

How to apply for an Armenian eVisa

  1. Go to evisa.mfa.am and check your nationality’s eligibility.
  2. Complete the online application form with your personal details, passport information and travel dates.
  3. Upload a passport-quality photograph meeting the portal’s specifications.
  4. Pay the fee online by card.
  5. Receive your approved eVisa by email within 3 business days (counted from the next business day after submission).
  6. Print the eVisa and present it at Armenian border control alongside your passport.

Apply at least 10–14 days before travel

Standard processing is 3 business days, but during peak travel periods it can take 5–15 days for some nationalities. Apply well in advance. Extensions of up to 60 days are possible at AMD 500 (~$1.30) per day — apply at least 15 working days before your current visa expires.

Visa on Arrival at Zvartnots Airport

Visa on arrival is available at Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) for eligible nationalities. Fees and eligible countries follow the same schedule as the eVisa — AMD 3,000 (~$8) for a 21-day single entry visa.

In practice, applying for an eVisa online before travel is strongly preferable to visa on arrival — the online process is faster, confirmed before you fly, and avoids queues at the airport immigration desk. Use visa on arrival only if you were unable to apply in advance.

Holders of US/EU/Schengen visas or residence permits

Nationals of certain countries who hold a valid US visa, EU/Schengen visa, or residence permit from qualifying countries may be eligible for simplified entry or visa on arrival under specific conditions. Verify this at mfa.am/en/visa as the rules are complex and nationality-specific.

Entry Requirements for Armenia

Passport validity

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Armenia. Armenian border regulations do not require six months’ validity beyond your departure date — but airlines may enforce their own rules. A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return is recommended.

What you need at the border

  • Valid passport
  • Printed eVisa (if applicable) — the border officer will check it
  • Proof of onward travel is not routinely required but may be requested
  • Sufficient funds — not routinely checked but you may be asked

Passport stamp

Armenia stamps passports on entry and exit. If you are travelling onwards to a country where evidence of Armenia travel could cause issues (historically relevant for certain Middle Eastern countries), be aware that an Armenian stamp will be visible in your passport. This situation has significantly improved in recent years but is worth checking for your specific onward destination.

What Happens at Zvartnots Airport Border Control

Zvartnots Airport has two passport control lines: one for Armenian citizens and residents (usually fast), one for all other passports. On busy summer evenings when multiple long-haul flights land simultaneously, the foreign passport queue can take 30–60 minutes. For most arrivals, expect 15–25 minutes from landing to the arrivals hall.

Border officers are professional. Questions are typically limited to purpose of visit (tourism/business), accommodation address, and length of stay. Standard answers are sufficient.

STEP registration for Americans

US citizens should register with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov before departure. Free, 5 minutes, and ensures the US Embassy in Yerevan can contact you in an emergency. The US Embassy in Yerevan is at 1 American Avenue, Yerevan.

Extending Your Stay in Armenia

Visa-free visitors can stay up to 180 days in any 12-month period without any registration or extension process. Simply leave and re-enter if you wish to stay longer (subject to the 180-day annual limit).

eVisa holders can extend their stay for up to 60 additional days at AMD 500 (~$1.30) per day. Apply for the extension through the eVisa system at evisa.mfa.am at least 15 working days before your current visa expires.

For stays longer than 180 days or permanent relocation, a temporary residence permit is required — applied through the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs. This is outside the scope of this guide; consult mfa.am/en/residency for current requirements.

Border Crossings — What’s Open

BorderStatusNotes
Armenia–GeorgiaOpenBagratashen crossing (main road). Used by most overland travellers on the Yerevan–Tbilisi route.
Armenia–IranOpenMeghri crossing in southern Syunik. Check current requirements for Iranian visa separately.
Armenia–TurkeyClosedAll border crossings with Turkey are closed. No overland entry possible.
Armenia–AzerbaijanClosedAll border crossings with Azerbaijan are closed. Do not approach the border zone.

Azerbaijan border — important safety note

The Armenia–Azerbaijan border is closed and the border zone in Syunik and Gegharkunik regions is militarised. Do not approach it. All standard tourist routes in Armenia are well within safe Armenian-controlled territory. This is the most important safety note for visitors to Armenia.

After Arrival — Registration

Under Armenian law, hotels, sanatoriums and tourist bases are responsible for registering their foreign guests — so visitors staying in hotels do not need to handle this separately. Visitors staying in private apartments arranged independently should contact the Ministry of Internal Affairs for registration, as the landlord is not legally obligated to do this on their behalf. In practice, registration requirements are complex and enforcement for short tourist stays varies — if staying in a private apartment, discuss this with your host. Travel Insurance for Armenia

Armenia does not require travel insurance for entry — but getting it before you fly is strongly recommended. Medical care in private hospitals in Yerevan is good, but medical evacuation from Armenia without insurance is expensive. EKTA and Visitors Coverage both offer policies covering Armenia with medical evacuation included.

Always verify current requirements at mfa.am before travel.

Citizens of the UAE enter Armenia visa-free. Nationals of other countries who hold a valid UAE residence permit (valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry) were eligible for visa-free entry under the temporary January–July 2026 exemption for 113 countries. After 1 July 2026, verify current rules at mfa.am/en/visa.

Always verify for your specific nationality

Visa rules are nationality-specific and change. The only authoritative source for your current requirements is the Armenian MFA visa checker at mfa.am/en/visa. Use the tool there with your passport country selected.
